Our Explorer package is without a doubt the best way to experience the spectacular scenery from the Great New Zealand Cycle Trail, and phenomenal views of the stunning Lake Taupo region.
In one day, you will enjoy a leisurely 2-3 hour mountain-bike ride, and 3 hours kayaking on the crystal clear waters of Lake Taupo.
You will meet us at our base in Acacia Bay, where we will load your bike then set off by road to Whakaipo Bay car park, to ride W2K (Whaikapo bay to Kinloch) section of the Great Lake Trail.
Trail blurb: Starting at the beginning of the track at Whakaipo Bay car park which is one of the last untouched public and farmed reserves left on the shores of Lake Taupo. You will ride 300, through farmland, past paddocks of sheep and up into the bush. The stepper portion of the ride is at the beginning of the trail, at the 4km the trail climb becomes a steady and undulating pumice trail ride through native bush towards head loop & Kinloch. There was no major importing of gravel into this track, the surface it just the way a real mountain bike track should be. Looping around some contours on the hillsides there are excellent views of the Lake and the Tongariro National Park to the south. Along the Great Lake Trail listen for native birds and wind in the bushes at one of the nice viewpoints. There are some great fast flowing sections on this part of the trail as you approach the junction of the headland loop there is a shelter, toilet and map.
Motorised Kayaks TaupoFrom here the pumice trail it is almost downhill on for the next 6km into Kinloch. Where you can enjoy the fast and flowing descent through bush-clad tracks before emerging round a rocky hillside clearing to see the fantastic unspoiled views of Kinloch and the glistering lake below. Enjoy the switchbacks.. There is a small gate at the bottom of the track before crossing a residential road. This section of the Great Lake Trail then follows a gully, goes past a few big boulders, and onto a boardwalk before emerging onto the beach .
At the Kinloch beach you will be meet by your kayak guide who will load you bike onto trailer.
After a gourmet lunch stop in Kinloch, your guide will equip you, so we can set off on our kayaking journey around the headlands towards Whakaipo Bay. We will pass sheer tree-lined cliff faces that drop into the lake, and spectacular volcanic rocks/cliffs that emerge from the clear blue/green waters of the magnificent Lake Taupo.
We will enjoy a gourmet afternoon tea at Whakaipo Bay. This place is so rustic and raw that you will fall in love with it!! before returning back to base by road.
This trip can be run in the opposite direction too. A good climb still for less experienced or less fit riders that rewards you with everything you could want from a ride; great views, fast and flowing downhills and a workout!
