Lions Walk – (for the whole family – a paved ride)
Distance: 10km (one way) or 20km (return) – Grade 1
Starting from Taupo Boat Harbour you can ride and walk along the lakefront right out to 5 Mile Bay, on a cobbled and paved pathway.
This ride is riding at its most basic level – even tots with training wheels can cope with this ride. The fairly flat trail has plenty of stopping points along the way to take in the spectacular views of the mountains, go for a quick swim in the lake, or break at the coffee cart for a latte. At the finishing point at Wharawaka Point there is a lovely play ground with plenty of picnic spots.
Tongariro River Trail (family trail ride)
Distance upto 15km- Grade 2
A scenic looped ride along both sides of the Tongariro River Trail at Turangi through some awesome native bush, with cool views into the clear waters of the river. This is a gentle ride suitable for families wanting to spend a pleasant few hours either biking or walking. The Tongariro National Trout Centre is a great place to break your journey, with lovely picnic areas and facilities on site.
Also along the trail you could ride over a swing bridge, see the keen trout enthusiast catching some trout or casting off.
There are a few other tracks that you could branch off onto too – to see the spectacular view of Pihanga, mountains too.
Distance 38km return- Grade 5
Te Iringa is a DOC managed walking trail that is renowned for its technical riding. It has large carry sections and should only be attempted when you are riding at an expert level, or have plenty of gear to stay out overnight. If you are into the outdoors and love mountain biking on some of the most technical trails in New Zealand then this is a trail you must tick off your bucket list.
Tree Trunk Gorge
Distance 19km- Grade 3
About an hour south of Taupo this gem of a ride is just off the Desert Road. It has river crossings, rocks and awesome Beech forest riding. You can turn around at the Pillars of Hercules and ride back to get the best of both worlds, or bush bash out to the State Highway, then ride back on the road a few kilometres. The single track trail is great fun but be prepared as the river crossings can be pretty cold.
